What is PITHRU DOSH ? How to recognize it and how to mitigate it

Pithru Dosh happens because ancestors have not been given their respects / homage that’s due to them.
So basically it means
  1. Reasons for pithru dosha
    1. either the rituals after the death were not performed properly or
    2. the yearly SHRADDH rituals are not being performed regularly.
  2. There are 2 ways of performing sheadh
    1. Complete shradh (full version) – where you call the Brahmins and get them to do the shradh rituals and do “AVAHANAM” of your ancestor (father / grandfather / mother / grand mother) in one of the Brahmins and feed him. The thought process is one the “AVAHANAM” is complete, this Brahmin will represent your ancestor in physical form. So feeding him is considered equivalent to feeding your ancestor.
    2. Hiranya Shradh – this is where you just call the Brahmins and give RAW/Uncooked RICE and RAW BANANA (kaccha kela) along with some money. There will be no elaborate rituals here. Usually people who are really old and can not afford to do a full fledged shradh either because of physical or monetary reasons opt for this.
  3. Again this is done yearly cause it’s believed that 1 year of o ur time is equal to 1 day for our dead ancestors
    1. so it’s either done in the same month and tithi and Paksha – for example nakara made – Shukla Paksha CHATHURDASHI – meaning 14th day after NEW MOON in the month of MAKARA. This is usually followed by BRAHMINS
    2. The most common time is to do during the MAHALAYA PAKSHA / PITHRU PAKSHA at the same tithi that the person passed away. This would be around SEPTEMBER of every year. That’s the reason marriages or house warming or naming ceremonies will never happen in this period. Cause socially the SHRADH is given more importance and you don’t want to disturb people during that period ( not to mention the food restriction people might follow during this time)
  4. it’s said that GOD will forgive you for faltering but Pithrus would never. So the SHRADH rituals need to bee performed with utmost SINCEREITY AND REGULARITY.
  5. It believed that the LORD Yama (YAMRAJ) Will send off all the pithrus to mrityuloka (EARTH), during MAHALAYPAKSHA. These pithrus come and wait at the doorstep of their descendants and they are hungry and pining for food. And they can’t go back until they are fed. So if their direct descendants don’t care about them, it’s obvious they get angry. Another thing is that they don’t have eyes, and they can only HEAR. So if you don’t do shradh rituals regularly these pithrus get super angry and will curse you and your descendants and that’s pithru dosh.
  6. Effects of pithru dosh
    1. Lack of happiness in the household
    2. sudden events – death
    3. small arguments become big fights
    4. divorce
    5. lack of happiness from birth of children (children are not born for eligible parents inspire of having no medical issues)
    6. Children are always sick
    7. some member of the family is always sick
    8. no success in occupation
  7. How to find pithru disha from the horoscope
    1. Sun is with RAHU or Ketu or posited in nakshatra owned by RAHU or Ketu – pithru disha from the father’s side of the family
    2. Moon is with RAHU or Ketu or posited in nakshatra owned by RAHU or Ketu – pithru disha from mother’s side of the family
    3. if this conjunction happens in the 8th house it’s really bad
    4. if SATURN joins this conjunction then it becomes worse.
    5. nakshatras owned by RAHU
      1. Aridra
      2. Swati
      3. Satabhisha
    6. nakshatras owned by Ketu

Solution to pithru dosh
Only solution is reaching out to the pundit of your community and ask him to do SHRADH.
Usually the pundit might a”recommend you to do the shradh am for all the years that you missed. It may also require you to go to GAYA or VARANASI to do these rituals. Please do it. You might have to spend some money. But just think money will come back again. Peace and happiness is priceless.
